Have you ever wondered why you need to eat several times a day? Of course, some people only eat once a day, from morning till night 😂. Why can't it be like a vaccination, once administered, it lasts for many years. The answer is because that is how God designed the human body, showing that just as our bodies need daily nourishment, so our spirit needs daily spiritual nourishment, the Word of God.
“Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” Mark 1:38 ESV
Mark 1:32-39
Now it's time for you to get out your Bible and read today's passage. Listen to what God wants to teach you today.
Jesus performed all kinds of miracles during his life on earth, healing the sick, raising the dead, commanding nature, making food more nutritious, and even turning water into wine. These are all very important things in all our lives, health, safety, nourishing our bodies. We can see from this that Jesus was and is still concerned with our physical needs.
„Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” Matthew 6:31-32 ESV
Yet Jesus considers all this to be incidental, since he says he came to preach the word. Why was this his priority, his main mission? Because all other miracles are physical aids. Healing from sickness is important, but if there is no salvation, the end is hell. It is important to nourish the body, but if there is no spiritual nourishment, the end is spiritual death. Jesus considered and still considers more important, the word that also saves the soul from eternal destruction.
Therefore, the priority for us is also the proclamation of the Word. The prerequisite for this is that we ourselves know the Word. Spend time with the Word of God, know it as deeply as possible, and have a burning heart to pass it on to as many people as possible, so that they may know God and be saved from death.
Jeremiah said that Word is like fire in his bones (Jeremiah 20:9).
Reflective questions
- How much time do you spend daily feeding your soul, reading the Word?
- How well do you know the Word? Would you like to know it better? Read the commentaries, educate yourself if God calls you to.
- Is your priority to give the Word of God to the people? How can you do that? Make a strategy if necessary.
- Can you say with Jeremiah that the word is fire in your bones?
Practice this the following week. Take time each day for the Word, make a decision. Share the gospel with others. Make this the most important goal in your life, to save people from death to life.
